Abstract

The digestate obtained through the anaerobic digestion process can be used and beneficial in agricultural production, however, there are little information and recommendations for a safe use of this by-product in agriculture. In view of this, the objective of this work was to characterize the digestate obtained from the anaerobic treatment of residential food waste and to evaluate its feasibility for use in irrigated agriculture. To carry out the project, the HomeBiogas 2.0 digester was used. The digester was operated for 8 months, within this period physical-chemical and biological analyzes of the effluent were carried out periodically, in order to obtain representative values ​​for its characterization. From the results obtained, it was found that the digestate presented interesting chemical elements for agricultural use, including macros and some micronutrients, and high organic load. Furthermore, the digestate showed acceptable microbiological health for agricultural application. The iron, dissolved and suspended solids content were above the recommended for use in irrigation systems, thus, for its application via irrigation system, it is necessary to carry out a post-treatment for the digest obtained. From the above results, it was concluded that digestate can have great benefits in agricultural production if used in a planned and controlled manner.
