FUEL CONSUMPTION AND LOSS OF SUGAR CANE DURING DAYTIME AND NIGHTTIME HARVESTING

ABSTRACT: In recent years agriculture has been facing pressure to change techniques in order to increase productivity, reduce production costs and environment sustainability. The major technological breakthrough for the sugar cane field was the replacement of manual harvesting system by the mechanized system. Mechanized harvesting supply the labor scarcity for cutting, improve harvest efficiency and causes less aggression to the environment, since the burning of sugarcane is no longer used. The objective was to evaluate a harvester performance during the first and last shift. The sugarcane was planted with spacing between the planting rows of 1.5 m. The harvester was evaluated during the operation in two shifts of eight hours each, divided into: Shift A (8:01 to 16:00) and shift C(00:01 to 8:00 am). The evaluation had the following parameters: loss of raw material visible in the field; mineral impurities in the raw materials harvested and fuel consumption. Data were subjected to analysis of variance using the Tukey test at 5% probability. The results showed that the fuel consumption of the harvester was equal between shifts. The total loss of raw material visible in the field was greater for the C shift, and the mineral impurities was also higher in C shift raw material.

KEYWORDS: mechanized harvesting, fuel consumption, operating efficiency.
